A GOOD MEETING

REVIVED INTEREST

j A very good meeting in connection ' with, ambulance work was held at the j Borough Chambers on Thursday evening, liiere were about fifty present. ] Dr. A. M. Young presided. In his ; opening remarks he introduced two lady i organisers from Wellington, Mrs. Barl. ; trpp, assistant commissioiier, and Miss '■ Robieson. The obejet of their visit I was to revive interest in the work and ;to re-form a branch in Hawera. He : said the association was a great boon and had the co-operation and goodwill \ of the medical men, who appreciated the splendid and able work or the first aid enthusiasts. He referred to the great yar, and the invaluable help or' the ! V.A.D.'s in the war, which was assisted by their earlier training in first aid i work. They had performed a national i service. He wished the ladies every j success in the object of their visit, and 'read a telegram of congratulation and , good cheer from Wanganui. | Miss Robieson, in an interesting address, spoke of the numbers of St. John Ambulance men and V.A.D.'s who were ready when the war called for service, j She briefly traced the history of the I movement, which was centuries old, j but was fresh and virile to-day. I Mrs. Barltrop spoke of the formation | of a local branch, and said she was pleased with the assurance of the supI port of the medical men, which was i much appreciated. She hoped that there would be formed a women's home nursing division and a men's ambulance division, with fortnightly practice for l)oth. She referred to the necessity for and value of first aid in time of accident- and to the number of lives j saved, while others were lost through ! ignorance of first aid. She advocated j simple measures, lectures, and practical | denionstrations. In conclusion, she ; briefly alluded to General Allenby's re- ' quest and instanced the many testimonies given for the great services rendered. i After some little discussion Mr. W. R. Taylor moved, and Mr. E. A. Booth seconded, a motion that the meeting \ agree to re-form the St. John Ambulance Association, and that the follow- , ing names be those of a committee, with power to add to their number: Dr. Young, Nurse Dix, Mrs. Dowling, • Mrs. Claringbold, Misses P. Bates and ', Mather, Messrs Booth. Liddington, H. i V. Squire, F. C. Spratt, and N. Hatcher. - It is hoped that through the cour- i tesy of the Education Board the as- i sooiation will hare the use of the old i Technical High School for meetings and , i practices. j A hearty vete of thanks to the chair- j man and to the ladies concluded a good , 1 meeting. i
