HON. J. G. COATES.

•—— , DEPUTATIONS AT ELTHAM. I The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. G. Coates) visited Elfham this morning, and was waited on by gentlemen representing Eltham Cotinty, Eltham Borough and Hawera County. Mr O. J. Hawken, M.P., was* also present, and supported the deputation's lequests. I Messrs C. J. Belcher and A. Campbell, of the Eltham County Council, .said that the Tirhnoana settlers were trying to raise a loan of £5000 to do 3i miles of metalling. - The Minister was in jmvour of giving a £1 for £1 subsidy for a portion— possibly the portion as far down as the Tirimoana factory, a distance of 1^ miles. The Eltham County representatives also made representations in regard to the Mountain Road. This road, which would become part of the main road to > Eitham, was being metalled as one of the roads in the South Riding loan of £20.000. It was urged that the Government should make a contribution towards this road, and at the same time make a deviation in the Tawhiti liill. M.r J. B. Murdoch, chairman of the Hawera County Council, brought several matters before the Minister. ■ Pie asked for a deviation and subsidy in connection with the work at Brett's corner. Then he asked for assistance with" the metalling of the Ngawhini Road, and he also"asked for assistance in repairing the damage caused by slips in^ the Ararata riding. The claims in connection with the work on three bridges were also put forward by Mr Murdoch! There was the Wainccongora bridge and the Manga told bridge, on the Skeet Road, and there was also the matter of the Tonga-hoe bridge, on the Main A Souih Road. As regards the last-mentioned bridge, if the Government wanted the County to erect the larger and more expensive bridge the Council would reqinre assistance from the Government to the extent of the excess of the cost of a. new bridge over the cost of rebuilding the old one. The Minister promised to consider the questions brought before him.
