« HOUSING OF TEACHERS. (BY TTGLEC-llAl'll■ —PKESS ASSOCIATION.) 1 AUCKLAND, Juiib 6The conditions obtaining in country districts in regard to the' housing ol teachers was referred to at the Eduea^ tion Board meeting to-day. It was stated by a lady member of a school committee, who waited on the board, that since taking a position at Kaihery a teacher had married and was now rearing a young family in the old shelter shed of the school, under very primitive conditions. The board decided to' make a request to the Department for the erection of a residence there. Th opinion was expressed that the whole question of teachers' residences should be re-onened, Mr Biyns declaring the time had arrived when the matter should receive the serious consideration of the authorities. If residences were not provided they could not get married teachers to go into the country. The Department should now withdraw the restriction against teachers' .residences, which had been made necessary during the period of financial stress, and allow a substantial sum for such dwellings. Mr. McKenzie (acting - chairman) thought that now money was available, or couid be got at reasonable rates, there was no reason why applications for residences should *b« any longer withheld. Mr Burns declared that the time had come for the raising of a loan to complete school buildings and i^sidem-es throughout New Zealand. The matter was not a party but a national one, and if the Prime Minister brought down a Bill for the loan of £1,000,000 no member would dare to vote against it. | It was decided to make representations to the Department to remove the .restrictions, and to forward on all applications for residences.
