! —-+__ | (From Our Own Correspondent). 1 HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the above ; was held in the C.E.M.S. rooms last , evening. The president of the society ' (Mr H. C. Johnson) presided. There were a fair number of members pre-j sent, I ' The annual report stated that the. society was to be congratulated on" . the conclusion of a, year of most sue-! , cessful operations. The spring show , had been revived with success, not only in finance, but still better in display and quality of- blooms. The 12(>4 . entries in the summer show probably L constituted a record for Eltham, while . the display of cut flowers (495 entries) was said to be the foremost in Tara-| ! naki. In other sections the display! was fully up to standard. The pupils j . of the schools in the town, and those' competing in the potato championship, i had been invited to attend the show. The garden competitions, rural, half- • acre town, and town cottage, had been ! conducted with great success. *~ The j year began with a balance of £11 11s 3d, and ended with a credit of £20 12s 7d. This was in itself satisfactory, ! and added should be shown the assets • accumulated in the year. As dona-' ( tions totalled £39 75., exclusive of prize i money refunded amounting to £7 2s, ' Lit was evident that the society still 1 required these to carry on. Altogether there were 83 members, bringing in £10 7s 6d. The thanks of the society were due to Messrs McGarry and Chry- ; stal for the donating of challenge cups, I also to Messrs McGarry and Phillips '. for the returning of cash prizes won , by them in the garden competitions. J For competition at future shows the | , society had the promise of four addi-i tional silver cups, and also special j prizes from the leading nurserymen and seedsmen of the North Island. The . society had well in hand the elemen- . tary organisation for the formation of . > a Taranaki Association of Horticul-J : tural Societies, which would ensure1 , uniformity of rules and standards, and i would allow the allotting of and the i competing for Taranaki championships! in rotation at tv» various centres. The committee received with regi'et the notice that the secretary was unable to1 continue in office for a further term, and expressed appreciation of his valuable services to the society. j The balance-sheet showed receipts' during the year to be £179 15s 3d, J and expenditure £170 13s lid, with a: credit balance of £20 12s 7d. I Th« chairman moved the adoption of ■ the report, and in doing so referred to the successful nature of the society's ' activities during the year. He stated that the door takings were hardly sufficient to cover the cost of running the ■ ; show. The society was doing good . work in beautifying the town by encouraging attention to flower and cab- ] bage gardens. i Mr Pepperell, seconded the adoption, and it was carried without further discussion, i An alteration of a minor nature was made to the rules of the society. The mee-ting decided to support the suggested Taranaki Association of : Horticultural Societies. | The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follow:—President, Mr F. R.
