MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

+ —-— WEEKLY SITTING. The weekly sitting of the Hawera Magistrate's Court was presided over to-day by Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M. PETTY THEFT. Arthur Joseph Corrigan pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a tyre tester valued at 7s 6d. It was stated that Corrigan had previously been convicted for illegally converting a motor car to his own use and also for stealing an overcoat. He was convicted and fined £3 and costs. BY DEFAULT. Judgment for the ..plaintiff with costs against the defendant was given in each of the following undefended civil cases: Hallenstein Bros., Ltd., v. G> McCallum, claim £4 15s 3d; Joseph Mathais v. Billy Ngeru, £90 16s; Reardon Bros. v. E. James, £9 ss; H. N. Maunder and Co. v. Edith McLean, £3 ss. BY-LAW CASES. The borough ranger proceeded against William Alexander Duckworth for allowing a horse to stray in Disraeli street. Defendant was fined 5s and 7s costs. i Owing to the non-appearance of the*, ranger, a number of similar cases were , adjourned until October 26. j , CLAIM FOR RATES j The chairman and commissioners of the Normanby Town Board proceeded against Frederick Jewell for rates amounting to £46 9s lid.-' Mr. Beechey appeared for the plaintiffs and Mr. H. L. Spratt for the defendant. Don Stewart, clerk for the Normanby Town Board, said that from January, 1921, S. Bennett took over the property in question from Jewell, and Bennett paid £6 in rates. Jewell paid two years' rates, and when asked "for other ; rates that had become due he told witness that he could, not claim the rates from him as the land belonged to the natives.. The" rent of the land was paid to Mr. Allan Good, who acted as agent for the native owner. Witness knew that Jewell had stock on the land. Robert P. Morrissey, auctioneer, and formerly an occupant of the land in question, said that the land was subleased to Jewell by him for a period i prior to 1916. Witness' interest then! ceased and Jewell retained the use of the land. i The case was adjourned until October 26. - j
