OPERATIC SOCIETY.

SOCIAL EVENING

A most enjoyable conversazione was held in the Foresters' Hall last night by members of the Hawera Amateur Operatic Society and friends. Despite the very unfavourable weather conditions there ' were about 40 couples present, and from the general atmosphere of sociability which prevailed those responsible may take it that their efforts were fully rewarded. The evening was a fitting conclusion to the society's first successful production. The , programme, which included dancing, games, and musical and elocutionary items, was a novel one, and at no time was interest allowed to flag. Dance music was provided by Messrs J. Renwick, W. Fennell, and C. Tobeck, while the Hawera Orchestral Society, under Mr. F. OUerenshaw,, surprised tKose present by arriving in force and playing for a number ot dances. Their act was much appreciated by the members of the Operatic Society, and demonstrated the' good' feeling which exists between the two* bodies. The musical and elocutionary side of the programme was well provided for, those contributing being^ Misses E. Homer and D. Machin (duet), Miss. C. Reilly (song), Mr. W. Fennell'(song), Mrs. Laidlaw and Mr. T; Harvey (duet), and Messrs S. Gibson arid R. Vivian (elocutionary items)..

The society's thanks are due to Mr. Hoddle for the excellent supper whichN he provided and Mr. Pratt for the loan1 of chairs. The society is^lso indebted' to Misses' Hunter, Machin, Holmes, and Roach.for the time and attention: they gave to arrangements generally. Altogether, the members may consider their venture a most successful one, and should look upon it as a re^union which should be invaluable to thet further strengthening of the society.
