PEDIGREE JERSEYS.

BULL FAIR AT STRATFORD,

good attendance—moderate prices.

The large number of pedigree Jersey! bulls available in the district was again evidenced by the large entry received | by the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club for1 their fair on Thursday. No less than! one hundred and nine were catalogued' I and of these all but a very few came into the ring tor sale. The exceptions were one bull reported unsafe to bring j to a sale, and two or three which the' club did not consider up to the quality desired. Messrs Kirk (New Plymouth) and Williams (Stratford), of Newton King, Ltd., were the auctioneers, a,nd they got through their work with celerity and dispatch. Before the sale commenced Mr. Frank Ranford, president- of the club, welcomed farmers who had come to the sale. He.said that the club were anxious to keep "up the standard of the stock offered, and therefore they had turned down a few animals after inspection, both in the interests ot the vendor and the buyer. They had come to the conclusion that it was necessary to cull pedigrees just as they culled grade animals, looking specially to maintenance of a high. grade of production and type. He mentioned that the A. and : P. Association had given their fine grounds apd pens at a nominal fee. There were a few animals entered which had not arrived, and for this a satisfactory explanation had been received. He hoped that local farmers would not let outside buyers take away too many of the good animals. '■''■■. Of the 109 catalogued 81 were sold, totalling about 1800 guineas. The highest figure reached, was 65gns., for a bull of Mr. M. A. Gadsby's, while 46 gns. each was received for two bulls of Mr. Pollock's. Generally speaking the quality was good, and the comparatively low . prices . probably, reflect the condition of the money market and the large supply available.
