SHIPPING SPACE SATISFACTORY

Mr. Sullivan, member for Avon, has urged the Minister for Agriculture to protect the local butter consumers from an excess of moisture in butter, and he has been informed by the Minister that this protection exists by regulation under the Dairy Industry. Act, 1908. It is provided that there, shall be not more than 16 per cent, of moisture in butter prepared for export. This corresponds with the maximum amount of water permitted in butter on sale to the New Zealand public, as provided by regulation under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. From time to time prosecutions have been instituted by the Department of Health on samples of butter containing an excess of moisture.
