NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Maecenas). Explorer fell on the flat while contestng the steeplechase at Avondale. It is stated that Paddington Green is rery sore, and as a result of same may ie e.ased in his work. Although unplaced in the Hawke's ■Jay Cup, Marqueteur is credited with! 'unning a good race in the event. Bonny Canny, which won at Avonlale, cost his owner 360 guineas in Aus- ! ;ralia. and is bred on the same lines as ' xlen Canny. | Nominations for the Wanganui Jockey Jlub's winter meeting close on Monday light. J Voluble was tried over a few hurdles luring the week, and jumped reasonably veil. On appearance it does not look is if the son of Mystification will earn ?rea.t distinction over the battens. The greatest drawback will be lack of size. Some who viewed. the All Aged Stakes, hold the opinion that Rational should have beaten Thespian in this went. , At 110 guineas. Surveyor must be roted one of the cheapest thoroughbreds sold for a considerable time. Surveyor lad bid adieu to the racecourse, and will io stud duty next season. No Bother, which gelding gave a good lisplay of fencing each day at the Awa3uni and Feilding meetings, fell during bhe running of the hurdle race on the second day of the Avondale meeting. Quite a number of horses have fallen luring the running of flat races at Hastings, and there appears to be little between the Hawke's Bay Club's track md that of the Wanganui Jockey Club, * ivhich course alone has been responsible :'or a number of horses falling during ■.he running of flat races. ' Should the Auckland-owned and/ trained division attend the Egmont Rae- ; ing Club's winter meeting, it will be a good draw for the club, which certainly i leserve a successful gathering. I Although the stipendiary stewards are becoming more active, rough dangerous, and incompetent riding is still noticeable, at almost every meeting. Possibly, ivhen the applications for riding licenses some before the licensing committee as now constituted, many now holding licenses will be relieved of same. When at Avondale meeting, Roy Reed was .offered tne ride on Correspondent in the Autumn Handicap at Hastings (irrespective of weight). As that gelding was put in the event at 6.7., no less than 191bs overweight had to be put up by Reed. Correspondent duly wbn the race. This was indeed handicapping one's own horse. R. Reed was engaged to ride Royal Box in the Avondale Handicap, in which event many good judges voted him a certainty. A couple of hours before the event, Mr Stead withdrew the son of Nassau. Unfortunately for his owner, Royal Box fras sent out to oppose Thespian, Rational and Co., for the All Aged Stakes, and met with injuries, which hurried his retirement for the season. <• Mr Coyle, as usual, was well up to time _wdth the Egmont weights, which should give satisfaction. On Feflding form, Marqueteur is remarkably well treated in the Mcßae Memorial. While in the Tonks' Memorial, Roman and Irapuka have got off lightly after their good displays there. Simonides, too, is nicely handicapped for the Tongahoe Hurdles, while Orchid will keep the opposition if sent to the post for the Telegraph Hack. Although the field for the All Aged Stakes at Avondale was not a large one, the race is described as .being somewhat rough. After going a short distance in the event. an attempt was made to go through on the inside with Royal Sox. but the son of Nassau got a bump which sent him on to a post and* spoilt whatever chance he may have had. It is stated that the knee of Royal Box struck the post with such force as to cause a mark on the post. Royal Box was accepted for on the second day of the meeting, but was too sore- to start.
