Tvlr. R. P. Ward, registrar or the^ Supreme Court and sheriff, Auckland,., has been appointed inspector to theJustice Department, Wellington.

The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister for Customs, and Mr. Montgomery left Sydney yesterday by the Moeraki. for Wellington (says a- cable message).

A London message says that the United Grand dLodge of Freemasons of" England has appointed the Prince of" Wales Senior Grand Warden and •■'the Lord Chancellor Junior Grand Warden.

The good work done by Mr E. G. Foden. as treasurer of * the Returned! Soldiers' Association was recognised by the members last night, when theycarried a vote of thanks with acclamation for his useful services, to the cluband the association.

A fine tribute was paid to Mr W. V. Patterson, the retiring president of the= Returned Soldiers' Association, on his. vacating the office after several years' service during a very difficult time. Mr Burdekin said Mr Patterson had done lengthy and valuable services toHawera and to the Dominion, for Hawera was looked up to throughout theDominion. He moved a most hearty vote of thanks to Mr Patterson. vThis. was carried with acclamation, and* received with hearty and prolonged applause. Mr Patterson, in acknowledging the compliment, returned sincerethanks, and said that what he had done he had done with a good heart and willingly, for he had always the interests of'the association at heart. Headded that he considered any success; achieved was due to the collaboration of the committee. He was sure Hawera was looked to with interestthroughout the Dominion.

[ The new president of the South. Taranaki Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr A. E. Gorton, saw a lot of service in Egypt and France. Enlist--ing with the main body of the RifleBrigade, he gained his D.C.M. and acommission in the field. He is a nephew of the late Colonel Gorton, for--merly of Bulls, a well-kown soldier of the Maori War. Before the war Mr Gorton was on the legal staff of the late W. G. Malone, and he is now managing clerk for Mr H. L. Spratt.. of Hawera.
