SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
(To trie Editor). Sir, —Judging by the report of the Hawera School Committee's ajinual meeting, we are now faced with, and in danger of being denounced by the demon, bigotry. Catholics, because they are taxed for the support of public schools, claim the right to a say in the management of those schools. But why exercise the right? There is no need. Surely those who make use of them are able and willing to' manage , them. We Catholics certainly find it j hard to maintain our schools, while also ' assisting to pay for the upkeep of national education, but is snot our faith worth far more than we are ever likely to called on to sacrifioe for it? If Catholics would only take this view, j and Protestants would recognise the I
fact that Catholic schools are saving the country an enormous sum of money annually for education, there would be some hope of fair play. At any rate, let us all. both Catholic and Protestant, try to "love one another, as Christ also hath Joyed us," and not defile the souls of our children with the foul stain of bigotry.—l am. etc, BRITISH CATHOLIC.
