A London cable announces the death of Lord Sinclair, who served in the 57th Regiment during the Maori War. The fifteenth baron Lord Sinclair has been a representative peer of Scotland since 1885. He entered the army in 1848, and served in the 57th Regiment in the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and in New Zealand, and he retired with the rank of colonel in 1878. Lord Sinclair was in his 91st year.

The New Plymouth. Convent hasbeen notified by mail from London that one of their pupils, Miss Mary Crawshaw, has been succesful in gaining an exhibition in the intermediate grade of pianoforte playing. Mr E. J. Gravestock, who is directing the tour, has arranged for the distinguished artists to give a concert in Hawera on June 20th. No singer to leave these shores in search of jjame has ever achieved such a success as Miss Buckman. To-day she ranks with Melba, Clara Butt and Tetrazinni. Her triumphs in grand opera and on the concert platform have been extraordinary. In the comparatively short time of ten years she has climbed right to the top of the tree, and London critics, who have claimed her as a. Britisher, style her "our foremost dramatic soprano," and it is not surprising to learn that over 10,000 people attended her farewell concert in the Royal Albert Hall, London, prior to her departure for her homeland.
