AUSTRALIAN RACING,

ETJBYTHMIC BEATEN.

«T CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGHT

SYDNEY, April 16. ! IPor the first day of the Australian «fockey Club's autumn meeting the attendance "was upwards of 90,000, a record. Features of the day's racing were Beauford's signal triumph over Kurythmic and the victory of the popular Julia Grey in the Doncaster Handicap. The conflict between Beauford and Eurythmie aroused intense interest and enthusiamamong sporting circles and it was primarily responsible for the record attendance. The consensus of opinion favoured Eurythmie's pi-ospeets on the score of ability, but sentiment favoured Beauford. The easy aaanner in which he vanquished his adversary electrified the speeators, who afll joined in the wild cheering at the finish, irrespective of whether they had backed him or not.

Julia Grey, which is always noted Jror honest work, won comfortably with Toohey in the saddle. Toohey won the last Doncaster on Speciality, the time «m each occasion being 1.38. Solfan«llo was not sighted at any stage of the race.

The Sunday Sun says Beauford conproved his superiority over JEurythmic. After the first two furlongs there was no semblance between tl»e pair; it was always Beauford first aad the rest nowhere.

The Herald says Beauford had the ■race won from the word go, and led "with an easy stride that suggested he could continue the same pace another couple of miles or so. It was difficult to believe that Eurythmie was showing true form. Beauford has clearly shown that there is no horse in Australia that can extend him, at all events up to a anile and a half.

The Telegraph says it was not a race,

but a procession, and describes Beau£ord as a phenomenal .galloper. If he liad been, pressed there was no saying •what he could have done. All that can lie said about Eurythniie is that he is &ot the Eurythmie which won the Sydney Cup a year ago. Eesults:

First Hurdle Race —Eedueine 1, Prince Stockington 2, Bendoe 3. Twenty-one starters. Won by five lengths. Time, 3.42£.

JSurythinie was ahead of Sister Olive, with Salitros and David in the rear. IBeauford increased his lead at the six furlongs post, and it looked like a runaway victory. Entering the straight the leader was challenged, but Eurythwas unequal to the task. Sister Qlivje failed to overhaul Beauford, who pass--ed the post with two lengths to spare, amidst the wildest enthusiasm. EurythJnie was third three lengths away. Time, 2.32£
