The Manual and Technical Committee reported, inter alia, as followsto yesterday's meeting of the Board: That the secretary be instructed to obtain reports from the principals of Technical College^ and High Schools as to how the Department's circular suspending the operation of the compulsory attendance ' regulations is affecting; the classes under \ their jurisdiction, and all information; so gathered be forwarded to tlie Department in support of the Board's resolu- ' tions that the circular be withdrawn; that the' Stratford Retailers' Association be congratulated on their success i in raising the sum of £807 towards the '■ Stratford Technical High School; that; the chief agricultural instructor be ask- { ed to report as to the system he pro- j poses to adopt in the distribution of the . supply of seeds and manures for" which i he asks; that the plan of the ground '• improvements as forwarded by th* ' Stratford Technical High School Ad-: visory Board be approved.—Adopted. I That the supervisor of manual instrup- ! tion bring down a report as to the best! means of establishing centres for in- 1 struction in rural science, woodwork and j cookery, embracing Hawera and El- i tham and all other schools too far re- ■ moved to attend the present centres.— j Moved by Mr A. Lees and seconded by • Mr H. Trimble, and carried. ' In moving the above motion, Mr Lees j said that he thought the time had ar- ' rived when an attempt should be made to put manual instruction throughout; Taranaki on a better footing than Jat present. Manual instruction as at pre-1 sent carried out was confined to towns ! on the railway line, with the result that schools removed from the line of railway were being neglected. PossiWy the means of travelling in the country "might account for this, but at any rate some definite report should be brought down to show the real position, particularly ,in South Taranaki. where he was sure good classes could be established. Mr Trimble, in seconding, stated thai; this proposal had his full support, although to carry it more* instructors would probably be required. The motion was carried unanimously. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended, inter alia: That the architect report at next meeting upon the matters arising out of the inspector's report re Hawera; that the Whareroa Hall Committee be written to for permission to instal a heating stove in the hall, with right of removal. The financial statement showed: Cr balance January 1, 1922, £5904 12s 3d; total receipts received to- March 31, 1922, £32,605 3s 7d: total expenditure to March 31 3 1922, £33,711 Os 8d; credit balance March 31, 1922, £4798 15s 2d.
