NOTES ON RANGiTIKEI M^JiiiNG.

(By "Maecenas.") I The second day's racing of the Rangi- I tikei Racing Club opened in threatening. weather, which culminated in a heavy 3ownpour after five evenfcr had been run. All things considered, the attend, mcc and betting must be deemed satisfactory. Last year £18,233 went through the machine, while yesterday £13,380 was invested. Racing opened with the Greatford Handicap, for which event Passionless was supported in a very confident manner, while Voluble, which was fancied by his connection, was comparatively I neglected, although h© had the services I of. Ashley Reid. When the" tapes flew up Lady Kotiripo went to the front and led Passionless and Bestir over the early stages. At the two furlong post Passionless went to tie lead, while Voluble (which, had been \kept eight or ten lengtits from the leader) moved up. Hard ridden, Passionless won by a head from Bestir, with Voluble a short length away third. Several of the runners in the Maiden received good support, and at the close of the betting Pam was only al6 bettei supported than Released, while Martulla and Whizz Bang also had a following. From a splendid start Orellana took up the running, and led Pam and a bunched lot to the bend for home. Here Oliver called, on Pam, but the filly had j to be ridden out to win by a head from j Released. Whizz Bang was a good j third. Springtide (for some extraordinary reason) was .backed for the Hurdles as if he were the equal of'1 Liberator, Kato being the only other runner supported with.any confidence. When the word! "go'> was given Flying Master went tv the front, and led Springtide and Kato to the initial obstacle. Here Kato lust six lengths, and Flying Master continued to lead the favourite till halt * mile from home. Flying Master then stopped quickly, and Springtide took command, and after a poor display won by a couple of lengths from Kato, which also failed to perform as well as at Opunake. In a good betting race Simomdes finished up favourite for the Fraser Memorial, but carried just on £50 more than Egmont Park, while Equitable and La Paloma also had a good following. When the field was despatched JLa Paloma took up the role of pacemaker, and led Pantler and Simonides till the i back • stretch, at which stage' Egmont j Park went up fast, and took up second: place behind Pantler. Turning into the i straight the field closed up, and in tho run to the post La Paloma and Detroit drew out. "A fought-out good finish, La Paloma winning all out by half a length, with Equitable a good third. | For, the Rangitoto Hack Mark Time was made a big favourite from Yeloci- , form and Bonecto, and the judgment was good, as the trio fought out a great I finish, Bonecto getting the verdict from 1 Mark Time by a nose, with Velociform a head, away third. Many thought Mark Time had won by a head. | Despite her failure on the opening day Left was supported for the Ngaio Welter as if the event was a foregone j conclusion, but the winner turned up in 'Spare Moment, which mare, artistically ridden by W. Young, was in front throughout, and wen easily from Left, on which A. Reed rode a vigorous finish and just beat Hallowroz for second. Eerie was well backed, but again failed. ! Rain was falling in torrents when the field lined up for the Pukemarama i Welter, for which event Cold Steel was a £25 better favourite than Kareao, this pair carrying the bulk of investments. From what could be seen of the race Kareao was in front throughout, and ridden out, won by three lengths from Cold Steel, which finished on well. Passin' Through was some distance away third. I The gathering concluded in heavy ram with the Farewell Hack, and in an ex- , cellent betting race Some Red was about ' £100 better supported than Eonmark. Regard and Gallia also had a good following. Jumping out in front, Regard was always slightly in the lead from Some Red and Eonmark, but at the fin- . ish just won from Eonmark, which . finished well.
