PRISONER ESCAPES

STILL AT LARGE.

ASHBURTON, Sept. 14. A prisoner escaped from the northbound express yesterday about 3.40, while the train was stationary at Ashburton cemetery. The escapee was last hoard N of at 5 o'clock yesterday, when inquiring for clothes and a bicycle, a mile from the railway. The police are still searching, but have not revealed the identity of the prisoner, who was recently sentenced at Dunedin and was proceeding in the custody of a single constable to Paparoa prison. The escapee is described as of light build, height sft. 6in.. and unshaven.

DUNEDIN, Sept. 14. The prisoner who escaped at Ashburton was Wm. Herbert Chapman, who was under sentence of six months tor theft of clothing and a bicycle.
