WAVERLEY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. At the annual meeting of the Waverley - Moumahnki Horticultural Society it was unanimously carried alter v good doul of discussion tinit owing to the lack of local support tliero bo no ilowor nhow hold in January, 1922. AN INTERESTING FOOTBALL TRIP. On Saturday morning a team of footballers left Waverley at 11.40 a.m. in Mr. lioswick's motor lorry, bound for I Ngamatupouri. As this wan tho first time tho majority of the players had been over this road, the trip proved an eye-opener as to what back country roads mean. The scenery right through was greatly admired, and tho hold-up going over the big saddle, when everyone had to put his shoulder to tho wheel to got the lorry out of a bog wan enjoyed by ono and all. Thereafter everything went swimmingly, and wo reached Itimunui at 3.15 p.m. The players stripped immediately on arrival, and\ after walking & good half-mile to tho ground, lined out as, follows: Fullback. E. C. Beswick: three-quarter, Christensenl,' (Round, Morrison; Gveeighths, Stewart. Gavvne; half, J. McDonald; forwards, Syme, Walker, Campbell, Rook, F. Cunningham, Hair and Patton; wing, Jury (captain). After a real good, hard game, in which no ono was killed, but in which ono Ngamatapouri player (F. Chesßwas) got properly winded just one half-time, and could not resume pla y again, Ngamatapouri proved the winners by 11 to 8. Trios were scored for the victors by Groves (2) and C. Ross, Rosa converting one and for'the'losers by Round (who made a great run from close on halfway and grounded behind the posts) and Jury, Syme converting one. Mr. W. Cowan made a very efficient referee. The barrackers proved absolutely impartial, and cheered on the Waverley players time after time. They seemed to think one full-back deserved the mofit cheering, and wherever he appeared after the match the call was "There's the full-back.*' After the match we wore regaled with a good healthy tea (much appreciated after being without food since breakfast), and then the players started out to find their billets, the Ngamatapouri residents kindly providing a home for us durincj our stay. At 8 p.m. we again met, this time to take part in a social evening hurriedly arranged by our worthy foemen. Hero j again the Waverley players were much j at home, and enjoyed the dancing, siiig- j ing, and supper. The music lot the dance, as played by Mr. and Miss Larson, was really enjoyable and, olthough the floor^ was stiff in the early part of the evening, the music kept all •■'oving. Mr. Patton, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Ngamatapouri team and the residents of the district for their kindness, and said, although defeated, the team was not disgraced. He then • called for three hearty cheers f<jr the • Ngamatapouri folk and an extra one for the ladies. Mr. Cowan, in replying, 1 said that, seeing Waverley had won the senior cup and that th9'ir team had defeated Waverley he thought it would , be only fair for Waverle v to send the • cup up to them. (Cheers.) On Sunday the Waveriey nlnyers were taken out in relays pig hunting, but the only ones to secure a pig wore the full-back and reporter. After a most enjoyable week-end, a start for liorae was made at 3.30 p.m., amidst an exchange of cheers. Again we find the pleasure of pushing our lorr v out of a bog. and also had the misfortune to run into a good shower of rain, which camped our clothes but not our spirits. We reached Waverlev safely at 6.46 p.m., all hungry and ready for tea. but all of one mind that the folk of Ngamitapouri know how fo treat *heir visitors and how to give them a good time. Tk« thanks of the Wayerley Club are due to Mr. C. Ross, in whose hands, the -billeting of the team fell, and vo all the residents who took us in and made us feel at home.
