LONDON, Sept. 12. Lhe Marquis of Milfordhaven is dead ISo one was present when ho suddenly expired. His housekeeper, after attending him, returned and found him ■dead. His wife and younger daughter were staying at a London hotel preparatory to journeying to Paris, and were summoned, but they arrived too late. Both his sons were absent serving on board warships.

He was a naturalised British subject, and gato brilliant service to the navy from 1868 becoming First Sea Lord. He resigned that high office soon after ,the out-i break of tho war, owing to public opposition. Ho was then Prince Louis of Battenberg, which designation ho exchanged for a marquisate in June, 1917. Ho probably deserved much more credit than was given to him for the splendid foresight in putting, the navy to sea quietly and secretly a few days before Britain entered tho war, enabling an important advantage to bo gamed at a most critical time.
