(BY TKLEOUAPH —PBEBS ASSOCIATION.; MASTERTON, Sept. 11. Roy Bateup and Roy Wilxnhitret, found guilty m the Supreme Court of cattle stealing were remanded for sentence to Monday. In reference to a recommendation for mercy for Vfilmkurst on account of his youth and low intelligence, Mr. Justice Salmond said that for the first time in his experience acoused had tho assurance, not to gay the audacity, to go into the box and try to make tho jury believe he was an innocent man, when two written confessions had been bandog in. Both men were admittedly liars, and Bateup, on his own confession, was not only a liar, but. a forger as well. He forged documents, told lies, and deceived the police. Wilmhurst. in two formal admissions, confessed hi 3 i guilt, and there was not the leasl doubt I that one of them stole the cattle. After a retirement of one and a quarter hours the jury returned a verdict of guilty.
