HAWERA 2 v. STRATFORD 1

The "soccer" team is contributingtowards the reputation of Hawera as a. *" football community./ -Qil;-Saturday the team journeyed^ to Stratford, and after a .hard game defeated the Stratford eleven by one goal. Once again the Hawera representatives played with several reserves,-and fheir chances of winning when the game started seemed very slight. However, they played surprisingly well and scored a creditable - win. Stratford kicked off, having the advantage of a strong breeze. Play wis mostly in the visitors' half, the Hawera goal having many escapes. Stratford forwards were playing very well. Wild shooting spoiling their chances of scoring. The Hawera right wing got going, but was pulled, up for off-side. Then the left worked the ball up, Brown nearly scaring from a good centre. At this stage very heavy rain stopped the game, and the interval was taken without score. When play was. resumed, the ground was in a very muddy state, making the ball heavy. Following mid-fieid play, -Brown received, sent out to Jones, and from a good pass. Hbrsburgh being unmarked, put Hawera one up. The Stratford forwards'here got going, and a mix-up round the goal saw Barker unfortunately put through, giving the goalie no cflance to save.
