AWATUNA

As was expected, the Kaponga concert party gave a splendid performance at Awatuna.on Monday, 27th ult., when the hall was packed. The concert opened with an orchestral item by Mrs. McCarty's orchestra and the applause had not ceased when Mr. Harris appeared and gave a splendid rendering* of "Tom o' Devon." followed by Miss Tait in "The Land of Long! Ago" and "Here's to Love." her performance showing great promise. Mrs. Davison was also well received with "Pierrot" and "Only a T:-nv Garden." Pianoforte solos wtere. rendered by--. Miss' Grace, "Les Panillions," and Miss Gny's splendid rendering of "Balmoral" was loudly applauded. Mr Clelland sang "The Old Fashioned House" and "Let the. Rest-of-the "-World Go By" with good effect, and Mr. Nicholson "Bring . Back Those Wonderful Days" and "I'm.Never Too Old" "(humorous). Mrs. McCarty and Mr. Harris were well received with their duet, < 'Sincerity '' as a%, wa* the <luet by Mrs. McCarty and Miss Ta:t, "Come Sing to Me " The most popular items on the programme were the recitations and monologues by Miss-Burt, of Wellington, whose masterly renderines of "The Elevator '' < 'Landlady,'' < 'Presentation the J icar." "Walnuts and Wine," "Shut Up/ -"The Coward." and "My JHrst Recitation," sjmoly brought the house down. The piano used at the concert was very kindly lent by Miss Cowies. The local Hall Committee will continue the euchre party and dance on ■Wednesday, 20th inst.. particulars' of which will be advertised later Several local changes on farms are contemplated for next season. Already 1 have heard of one farm here having been sold at about £50 per acre and dairy herds are changing hands at from £15 to £17 t>er head.
