MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A Maori named Ruru Sam was charged with (1) refusing to quit licensed premises at Okaiawa when ordered to do so by the licensee; (2) wilfully damaging a billiard cue; and (3) using obscene language in a public place. Accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant Henry, who appeared for the police, said that this was a very bad case, as accused had a bad reputation throughout the district, and he asked for a severe penalty as a warning to men of this type. Accused was fined on the first charge 40s, in default 14 days m gaol; on the second he was ordered to pay the damages, £2 ssand. on the third, the charge of obi scene language, he was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment without the option of a fine. A prohibition order was issued against him on the application of the police.

JUDGMENT SUMMONS. An order was made in the case of W. Noble v. R. Morrison for payment of £44 Is 6d, with costs £1 Us 6d, in default 45 days in gaol. CLAIM ON A LEASE.
Reserved judgment in the case J. D. O'Connell v. W. White, a claim of £130 for breach of covenants in a lease, was delivered. The items for which damages were allowed were as follows: Cleaning 22 chains of drains, £24----damage to boxthorn fences, £10; cutting 250 chains of boxthorn, £5; repairs to crossing, one chain by 'nine feet wide, £2 10s; cleaning up and burning boxthorn clippings, £7; grubbing gorse, £2. Claims for removing fences, repairs to windmill, and half cost of papering house were disallowed. The tot'al v allowed is £50 10s, and judgment was given for that amount, with costs and witnesses' expenses as per scale.-Defendant was allowed costs for three witnesses who came from Ngaere. At-^ the hearing Mr E. M. Beechey appeared for plaintiff, and Mr F. C. Spratt for defendant.
