WELLINGTON, May 10. . The'shearers' demands were before the Coacjliat'on Council, but no agreement was reached on any but minor points in the union's claims, and the dispute was referred to the Arbitration Court. For the employers, it was stated that they could not pay the rates demanded. Employers were loth to cut down wages, but the position of the industry to-day was worse than it had ever been in its h'rtorv.

One of the employers' representatives said that he was satisfied that the^e were very few fanners to-day who could; pay their income tax.
