FARMERS REDUCING HANDS.
GOVERNMENT MEASURES
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRKSS ASSOCIATION.^ WELLINGTON, May 8. Reports received indicate that a fairly large number of men are coming into the city from country districts seeking but failing to secure employment. It is stated farmers are cutting down the number of their hands and are reducing wages, and a.number of men left their employment, swelling the ranks of the unemployed.
The following "statement was made td-d:ay toy the acting-Prime Minister, ] Sir Francis Bell: " Cabinet has arrived at a general understanding that, in view of the probability that there would ibe some increase in uneployment and oj; scarcity of *noney available foi> Public -Works expenditure, building operations would be rigidly curtailed in order that more money may be available for employment of general labour."
