GENERAL BIRDWOOD

VISITS HAWERA NEXT MONTH

A public meeting was held in the Borougn Council Onambers last evening to arrange, for a reception to General Birdwood, who, in company with Lady and Miss Birdwood, will arrive at Hawera by motor car on July B. The Mayor (Mr E. Dixon) presided," and there was a fair attendance. It was decided that-'the Mayor and Mr W. V. Patterson (president of the R.S.A.) meet the. General at the railway station, and that a public procession, in which the returned soldiers will take part, will be „ formed and march to the site between "the present Technical School and the police station, where the reception will be held, and where General Birdwood will ,lay the foundation stone of the new Soldiers' Club. If -the day should prove to be wet the reception, will be held in the Opera House. Bouquets are to be presented to Lady and Miss Birdwood by Miss Dixon. The. Farmers' Co-op. is t.o be asked to re-erect the arch which formed such a prominent feature of the decorations on the occasion of the Prince of Wales' visit, and an arch is also to be decorated by the R.S.A. In order that the returned soldiers miay take a fitting place in the procession, it is requested that as many owners as possible will place their cars at their disposal for the procession. The only speakers at the reception will be the Mayor and Mr Patterson.
