DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

Some months ago representations were made by; the local Softool Committee to the Education Board with reference to the establishment of a District High School; at Opunake.: At that time only about fourteen children holding ;proficiency certificates were-prepared- to attend. . The Board, however, forwarded particulars to the Council of Education in the hope that something might be done- In reference to the above the chairman of the School Committee has just. received the following reply : ''Rfc establishment of District High School at Opunake.—l have to inform you that at a recent meeting of th c Council of Education the following resolution, , which has since been approved by the \ Minister, was carried:, 'That the Minister be advised that, if there be a guarantee of, not fewer than twentyfive duly qualified pupils during, the year 1920, in the opinion of the Council a District High School should be established as from the beginning of -1920.'" A POPULAR TEACHER; A very, pleasant ceremony took place at the local school on Friday afternoon when the pupils 'entertained Miss Lewis, assistant teacher, who is leaving to take up duties at Ohirigaiti. The popularity of the teacher was demonstrated by the large number of parents who assembled, there being about forty present. A musical programme lasting aoout oneVand a. half hours was supplied by the pupils and greatly appreciated by the visitors. ■ '. ■ Mr Mildenhall, chairman, of the School Committee, on behalf of her pupils; presented Miss Lewis with a beautiful ring set with amethyst and pearls. On behalf of the teachei\s and other school children Miss Dome Ckmston presented the guest with a pair of gold ear-rings. Miss Lewis briefly returned thanks, stating that she was sorry to leave her pupils, . All present were then supplied with a bounteous repast dispensed by the elder pupils. . (
