PROTEST AGAINST RHINE RE-

SPARTACIST ASPIRATIONS
SHOWING RENEWED VIGOR
BY CABLE—PBESrf ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT
PARIS, June 9. Herr Ebert has sent an official protest to General Nugent at Spa against the proclamation or the Rhenish Republic. . He declares that thej French High Command provoked this political .act.
It is probable that the. French Government will not reply to the note. Dr. D'Orclen (President) declares that the republic will abide by the peace terms as signed at Versailles, although it would have liked a, voicq in the settlement.
Agitators at Qoblenz, as a protest against the Republic, called a strike. The American military, apprehending interference with thei transport of food, munitions, and troops., gave the strike leaders the option of calling off the strike or deportatiion, whejreupon work was resumed.
A Zurich message states that Spartacist aspirations, which have always been strong in Bavaria, are showing renewed vigor. They are supported by the Catholics and Independent Socialists from entirely different motives. The former desire to unite with the Tyrol Austrian Germans and form a Catholic State of Central Europe. This plan meets with the approval of Rome. The Independent Socialists want to create a southern State opposed to the Majority Socialists of northern Germany, ultimately hoping to pave the way to apply Independent doctrines all over Germany. The Bavarian Spartacists also hope to effect a separate peace $rith the; Entente, which will be more advantageous than that conceded to the German Empire.
