TECHNICAL EDUCATION

' 9 DIRECTOR'S REPORT. In reporting on technical education' to the Education Board on Wednesday, | Mr A. Gray (director) said, inter alia: Hawera—The numbers in the different classes totalled 150. The work is being carried out on general Technical High School lines,. I hope the school will be fully staffed by July Ist. The Advisoi'y Committee is> anxious that the foundation stone of the new building should be laid on that date if possible. At Eltham the number is 51. Some j good technical work might be done here I in connection with the Salvation Boys' Home. I propose to visit this institution during the holidays, and will present a report on the possibilities there ibefore the end of the month. As evidence of the scope of manual j and technical work in the; district, I' may remind the Board that there are' at present nineteen instructors engaged exclusively in this work. As this is my last report as director of manual amd technical work, I would j point out that the Board possesses in this staff a very efficient and enthuias- j tic band of workers. Personally I have to express very sincere gratitude to all thoso supervisorsi and instructors who have worked so loyally during the past years. To Mr Whitcombe and the offieo staff I am particularly grateful for much assistance and advice, especially dining the first years aftea" my appointment. I also wish to thank members of tli3 Board for the universal courtesy and consideration extended to me during my term of office. Whatever may be said to the contrary, there can be no doubt that technical education is the coming system —possibly not in just the same form as in the past, but certainly in some form or other. lam fully consfious of many mistakes of mine, but I suppose such, mistakes are inevitable in the inauguration of any new movement. ]
