HAWERA HOSPITAL BOARD

YESTERDAY'S MEETING

After the Star went to. press yesterday afternoon the following matters were dealt with by the ±tospical Board; Mr Wills was appointed a member of the .Building Committee. The Chief Health Officer advised that the Minister had approved of Mr C. M. Haggitt's appointment as secretary. Tne secretary reported that the certificates for the voluntary workers in. connection with the epidemic were Being sent out.

A letter was received from Mr T. JB. Crump, solicitor, Eltham, asking the Board to accept £30 in satisfaction of an amount owing by an Eltham invalided couple.—The amount was accepted. The manager ,of the South British. Insurance Co., Ltd., wrote asking for a .share of the Board's insurances. It was decided to inform the company that the Board had no intention, of changing its business at present, but the company would receive consideration, with, other offices, when it was dealing with the renewal of its policies. I The Board's architects (Messrs Duffill and Gibson) reported tnat the roof of the annexe to the women's ward had. now be,en covered with corrugated iron. at a cost of £66. Sketch plans for the farm manager's *'cottage and cowshed, had been carefully considered by Dr j Frengley, and some slight amendments j made. The plans had been forwarded. jto the Minister for his final consent. The report *as adopted. _ Inspector Gray reported, inter alia: Eleven cases of diphtheria were notified, all of which were removed to hospital except three—Hawera borough 1, Hawera county 7, Eltham borough 2, and Eltham county 1. On e scarlet fever case was removed to the hospital j from Hawera county. Nineteen case* of influenza were notified throughout the district, five of which were pneumonic, but none serious. Two cases of measles were notified.'—Th© report «te adopted. • ;.-..:. The matron (Miss G. E. Broad) reported that since the last meeting the admissions were 43, discharges 42, deaths 3. remaining in hospital 42 including three. patients in scarlet fever and seven in the diphtheria ward. Miss Barbara Manion had been placed on the permanent, probationer staff.—The report was adopted. j The Board adopted the special com-' , mittee's recommendation that the rates of salaries for probationer^ shall he as follows: First year, £26; "2nd year, £36; 3rd year, £48; 4th year, £55 (before passing ; £60 after passing examination. The secretary asked for an instruct i tion regarding epidemic patients' aei counts. The chairman said the Board had previously decided not to make a charge for treatment of influenza ! patients. The Minister thought the I Board should' make a charge, and the Matter was held up. _Mr Hawken considered that th« Board had made a mistake in n»t charging epidemic pat*»»te. The Patea Board did so. The chairman, thought that manywould like to pay, and he suggested to one gentleman who wanted to <5b 6<> that he make a donation to the Board. The secretary stated the majority o f | the accounts in the public hospital were for "Maori patients. It was decided that the accounts he written off. A letter was received from the Taranaki* Hospital Board suggesting a conference between the three Boards to consider the question of providing further accommodation at the Old People* I Home. " I _ It was agreed that Messrs Gillandere, | Campbell and the chairman be the Board's delegates at the conference. Mr Wills suggested it would be a good thing to bring before the conference the matter of legislation . being passed to compel infectious cases entering, the hospitals. t The chairman considered the suggestion an excellent one. Mr Bridge gave notice of motion, that the meetings of the Board in future be held on the third Thursday in the month at 7 p.m. Messrs Hawken and Wills were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Mr Campbell congratulated the chairman upon his report, which was received and adopted. The report wa*. published in yesterday's issue.
