BOROUGH OFFICE ASSISTANT.

QUESTION OF SALARY.

There was a long discussion at last night's meeting of the Hawera Borough Council over the recommendation from the General Committee tihiat an office assistant be advertised for at a. salary of £3 per week, Miss Whittingtou having resigned. The discussion centred around the remuneration proposed, Cr. Cumming warmly contending that if the Council were desirous of securing' a male assistant the £3 per week would not induoa anyone to come forward. It was not a living wage, and he moved that the salary'be £4 per week. , The Mayor pointed out that itj wae not certain whether a male would be appointed to thig position. Cr. Morrissey seconded pro forma. An amendment moved by Cr. Morrissey, seconded by Or. Goodwin, tihat a committee be set up to dlraf t conditions in regard to the, appointment, was Lost. rhe motion, was then put to the meeting and declared lost. A division was called for, voting being—For:' Crs. Cumming. Reid, and Lewis. Against: The Mayor, Ore. Bone, Hayton and Osborne.

Crs. Goodwin and Morrissey, did not exercise ihfetr yotes until they knew the exact conditions under an assistant would be appointed. Upon the motion adopting the committee's recommendation of £3 per week., being submitted the Mayor declared it negatived. A division was asked for, when the Mayor, "Ore. Bone Hay ton and Osborne voted for thej motton, and Crs. Ouroming, Reid, Morrissey and Goodwin against it. Cr. Lewis had retired from the meeting. The Mayor gay» his casting vote in favor of the motion. •

Subsequently Or. Cumming gave notic© of motion fox-'the next meeting to rescind the resolution. This will necessarily hang up the appointment, and the town clerk was authorised to engage temporary clerical assistance in the meantime.
