(From Our Own Correspondent^

BACHELORS' BALL. 4Kf^ The bachelors' ball held here on FrSk' day, 13th inst., proved a most enjoyable and very well attended function. The floor was in Al order, and everything went with a click. As a result, of the entertainment the sum of about: £4 was handed over to the Kaponga.. Red Cross Guild for Soldiers' Comforts. Fund. The success of the function was largely due to the hard work put in by the whole committee, and particularly the energetic secretary, Mr E.. W. Low. The committee desire to express their sincere thanks to those ladies who so kindly assisted with the * supper arrangements. The music for - the dance was supplied by McCarty'^. orchestra, and the catering was donK by Messrs Thomas, of Kaponga. MessrP Grimwood, O'Neill and L. Walker carried out the duties of M.C.'s to perfection. Thanks are also due to thosewho co kindly played the extras during the evening. FARMERS' UNION. Members are reminded of the Farmers' Union meeting on Friday evening. Business of considerable importance has been received from the pro-' vincial secretary, and an. instructive paper on the "Use and Abuse of Manures" will also be presented for discussion. Members of other branches will be cordially welcomed. THE WEATHER. The weather 6o far shows no improvement; indeed, since August it seems to have gone to pieces again, and feed is very backward. As in' other places there has been considerable mortality amongst, stock, one local farmer, I believe, having lost as many as 18 cows. The last few days have been quite wintry again, and thi» is assisting to keep the feed and! the milk supply down. PERSONAL. I regret to report that Mrs- Xi Malone has received word that her ebn, Private "Jim" Malone, hasshadi his right arm shattered by a shot in France. There was no further report as to his progress, but we-all hope-he* is getting along well.
