The Cardiff school was crowded on Friday, when a farewell was tendered to Privat© Harold Marchant, youngest son of one of the most esteemed settlers in the district, Mr G. A. Marchant. Grant Co wen, on behalf of the congregation, conveyed to Miss Morse their sincere sympathy in the death of her mother. Mr Cowen stated that Mrs Morse was born nine years before Queen Victoria came to the throne', and she had had a remarkable life. For many years in Nelson, she gave of her tim© and her talent to the work of the Church, serving in the choir and taking Sunday school classes. At Ngaere on Friday night, a farewell was -tendered Privates W. Walsh, R. Wylie, and A. Hammond. The chairman of the Patriotic Committee (Mr W. Morrison), presented each soldier with a wristlet watch, a.nd wished them all good luck whilst at the front. During the evening, Mr James contributed a song and Miss W. Vivell gave an exhibition of club-swinging. Music was supplied by Foster Bros., and the duties or M.C. were entrusted to Mr P. Burkett. Dr Mary Dowling, who has commenced practising in Hawera, was the first person to hold the Taranaki Scholarship. She studied medicine at the Otago University, and attained the highest points in her final examination for M.B. Ch.B. By so doing she won the Medical Travelling Scholarship for New Zealand, which entitled her to | take a special course at one of the large hospitals in the Old Country. Owing to the present scarcity of doctors in New Zealand she is unable to take advantage of this until after the war.
