ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

NAPIER, August 1. An accident occurred at Waipukurau. to-night, whereby a man named J. P.. Kelly, railway employee, lost his life. Deceased, who had been in Waipukurau for about ten days on railway departmental inquiry, boarded the Napier evening train at Takapau. On reaching Waipukurau, the train was shunted on to a side line to allow another train to pass. The unfortunate man, presumably, thought the train had stopped, and attempted to leave his carriage. It is thought that deceased, missed his foothold and fell beneath the train. No one witnessed the tragedy, although the guard felt his van bump over the body. The body was terribly mangled, the head being .severed from the trunk. Deceased belonged to the RaiLway Department at Wellington, and had 43 years' service. He was recently chief clerk to the mechanical engineer. He was married, bis wife residing in Wellington. He was about 60 years of age. An inquest will he held at Waroukurau to-morrow. DUNEDIN. August 1. Robert Robertson, aged 17 years, residing at Milton, and employed as a guard by the Waronui Coal Company, was brought to the hospital this afternoon, suffering from irntiries caused by an engine running over him while he was caught in the, points. He died soon alter arrival at the hospital.
