BREAK IN CABLE LOCATED.

WELLINGTON, May 15. Last week number one cable across Cook Strait, which stretches from Oterangi Bay, near Terawhiti, to White's Bay. parted. Tests have been made by Mr Shrimpton, telegraph engineer, Wellington, which- detected the break to be only some 300 yards from the shore in Oterangi Bay in only five ■fathoms of water, and a' suitable opportunity will be seiized to repair'the broken cable (which chafed through on a known ridge of rocks) by means of a surf boat. It is not expected to be a difficult job in fair weather.
