PENSION INCREASES.

THE BUDGET PROPOSALS

(By Telegraph—Special to Star.) ■WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. One of the most interesting proposals in the Budget to a large section of the community is the increase of old age, widows', Maori war, and miners' pensions, for which, a sum of £120,000 is to be devoted, a special earmark being placed on the £80,000 estimated from the tax on amusements. Although details have not yet been arranged, it is safe to predict that the maximum pension to old age, Maori war pensioners,' and widows ivill be raised by at least 3s per week, and probably by 3s 6d, while a substantial increase will also be made to pensioners tinder the Mines Act, who at present receive a flat rate of £l for married men, 15s for single men, and widows 12s 6d. Regarding old age pensioners, certain modifications will be made in the restrictions on those who have outside incomes.
