Private Ernest Sweeney was tried bj court-martial at Featherston Camp on June 15th on charges of (1) escaping from detention barracks in Wellington; (2) escaping from custody on May, 30th, (3) losing, by neglect, equipment and regimental necessaries to the value of £3 3s lOd. The accused was found guilty on all charges, and sentenced on the first two to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. Advices from Argentina state that great alarm his been caused by President Wilson's action owing to" Argentine industries being dependent upon North America for coal and other fuel. It is notified in a recent Gazette that the regulations made on June ISth last for it-he Home Service branch of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, have been amended by the cancellation of paragraph 5 and the substitution of the following: "Until the Minister of Defence shall otherwise direct, soldiers in the Home Service branch who are •required for iictual home service shall be called up from those only who volunteer for such aertual home service, ibrtt any person who, being "liable for serl vice under the Military Service Act, 1916, has committed an offence under the said Act or Army Act, and who may .■subsequently be transferred from the ■foreign service branch to the Home .Service branch of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force under paragraph 2 <B. of these regulations, may be eompulsorily employed on actual home service. Volunteers belonging to such trades or occupations as may from time 1o time bo specified hy the Minister of Dc-Vnce, shall not be accepted for actual Home service." 31st July is the closing date of Desert Gold Tea Comoetition.
