MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
TUESDAY, JULY 10
(Before Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M.) John Garson Phillips and George Gray were each charged (1) that on June 18 at Hastings road, near Okaiawa, a prohibited district proclaimed by the Governor, they did supply liquor to two natives, Rangiwhetu and AVananga Matoe; and (2) that they did introduce liquor into a Maori kainga. Mr P. ODea appeared for the defendants, who pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant Till explained that the defendants obtained the. liquor from the Okaiawa Hotel,:-and took it to Rangiwhetu's kainga, -where it 'was supplied to the two natives. The liquor consisted of a small soda bottle of whisky and a small bottle of "shandy." Mr ODea put forward extenuating circumstances, and submitted that the breaches were not very serious. The Magistrate: I cfuite appreciate Avhat Mr ODea has said, but the door must be kept shut, as otherwise the flood would soon come. It is the beginning of an evil which must be kept down. A fine of £1 was imposed upon each information, with costs. A private prosecution for assault ! was withdrawn, the parties having j come to a settlement. Judgment was entered for the plaintiff, with costs, in the undefended case of the Estate of Thomas Barmby v. J. D. Simpson, claim £10 13s 6d.
