SALVATION ARMY RAND.
The Wanganui Salvation Army Silver Band, which spent the week-end in -Hawera, returned to Wanganui today. The band came to Hawera with the object of assisting the local corps and also to raise funds for thfemselves, but when they heard tliat Ensign Brown had received word from the Commissioner that New Zealand was expected to raise £10,000 for the Army's w,ar work by July 21, the band i generously forwent their' own needs in ! favor of the larger appeal. At the open-air performance" on Saturday evening £37 was raised (exclusive of £15 collected for the band's expenses), while at the performance in the park on Sunday afternoon £22 was collect- . cd. In the evening the' band rendered ' the service "The Wreck of the Waira^ rapa," when the Opera House was crowded. The Rev. Mr Blamires gave the readings. A further appeal was made for the war work fund, when ajiother £22 was subscribed. This brought I the total up to £73, and before the ! meeting closed the amount was in- 1 creased to £100 by promises of further subscriptions. Ensign Brown telegraphed to the Commissioner . that £100 had been subscribed /by Hawera. The Mayor, on' behalf of the commanding officer,, thanked the band for their services, and also the people for their liberality. Ensign Brown thanked Mr j A. M.
