WELLINGTON, July 9. The Wellington Gas Company^ retort house men ceased work" yesterday morning, in accordance with notice^ Riven a fortnight ago. The retorts^, have since been kept going by squadsof men from the company's general staff, and it is hoped thus to be ableto keep the city supplied. Thirty men offered their services to replace theeighteen left, and though handicapped by inexperience, they managed to keepthe output of gas almost up to normal.
