ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr T. B. Crump), Crs G. W. Tayler, J. Bailantine, C. H. White, M. A. Whiteford, A. E. Smalley, H. Judd, A. Beesley, and H. G. Carman. Cr Lighfcbourne was absent through illness.. TOWN CLERK. Mr R. H. Irwin, the newlyappointed town clerk, wrote thanking the Council for appointing him, and staling that he would be able to take up the duties of the office after the 31st inst. Since this letter was written Mr Irwin had found that it would be inconvenient for him to take up the duties before the sth prox. The Mayor said that Mr Poynter had applied for an extension of time for going into camp, and perhaps arrangements could be made. He would know in the morning. CORRESPONDENCE. The District Manager of the N.Z. Railways wrote stating that the agreement between the Department and the Council for a^ water supply at the railway station for three years was ready, and asked that the seal of the Council be affixed. Cr Carman moved that the Mayor and Cr Whiteford be appointed to affix the seal of the Council to the deed, subject to its being approved by the Finance Committee. —Carried. The following resolutions were received from the Waipara County Council: (1) That owing to the serious decline in the quantity of the world's foodstuffs, every one with a small area of land be urged to cultivate it and grow potatoes and other vegetables that could be grown successfully; thereby the individual in helping to maintain him or herself would at the same time be helping the nation. (2) That every endeavor be made to grow wheat or oats in larger areas where likely to be grown successfully, thereby helping to keep our nation's granaries from becoming empty, and thus help to keep off what will otherwise be a disaster—a famine. (3) That a personal canvass be made throughout the country and suburban areas making these requests and securing promises to comply with them. (4) It is thought that the half-holidays could be profitably and healthily used in the cultivation of the small areas.

The Works Committee reported on ' the resolutions as follows: The Council is recommended to pass a resolution in sympathy with the resolutions forwarded by the Waipara County Council, and that it be given publicity through the presa.—Adopted. DISTRIBUTION OF MEAT. I The N.Z. Co-operative Bacon Company wrote acknowledging the Council's letter as to the distribution of meat in Eltham, stating that they could not see their way clear to undertake the distribution of meat, but submitted the following resolution: That this company would undertake killing through its abattoirs all the meat required for the retail trade of Eltham at reasonable prices to be agreed upon.—The letter had been before the Works Committee, which had no recommendation to make, and its re_ port was adopted.

SANITARY. The Works Committee reported on the sanitary condition of two stables as follows : Acting on a report of the Health Inspector, the Committee instructed that ndtices be served on the owners of two stables requiring that such premises be connected with the borough sew.erage, and also that proper manure receptacles be provided.— Adopted. GENERAL. The Works Committee1 reported that it could not recommend the free dcliv-! cry of coke from the gasworks by the borough's dr*ja. The Finance Committee .reported that* it had resolved that all returned soldiers and soldiers on leave, wearing uniform, be admitted to the pictures free of charge. REPORTS. The caretaker of the Domain reported concerning improvements that had re-, cently been made at the park, and re- \ commended that a lavatory and bathing shed be erected.—lst was resolved that the matter be referred to the Works ! Committee to report. The borough foreman recommended the purchase of a large tar boiler, which was agreed to. The borough inspector reported that the sanitary condition of the town was in good order, particularly hotels and boarding houses. The gas manager reported that 524,000 cubic feet of gas had been manufactured during the month. A fresh supply of fittings, mantles and glassware had arrived in a sound condition from England. A further supply ordered may arrive at any time, and should they be early to suit requirements, any gasworks would be glad to have them. The matter of mantles was referred to the Finance Committee for enquiry. MOTOR CAR LICENSES. Cr Smalley asked how many motor cars were licensed to ply for hire, and it drivers were licensed. The Mayor said the number was about 28. The by-laws did not provide for the licensing of drivers. He thought that might be considered. A detailed list of all cars licensed was ordered to be laid on the table at next meeting. PERSONAL. Mr 11. C. D. Lightbourne, who has been ill for a week, has, owing to his illness, to take a change for a time, and has been granted leave of absence from his scholastic duties for a month. Lieut. R. J. Carter returned on Thursday evening from Samoa, where he has been for the last two and a-half years. He is on leave.
