MANGATOKI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The dance in aid of the soldiers' gift Jx>xes was held on Tuesday evening, and drew a very large crowd. Tiie takings amounted to £10 7s 6d, and were a record tec the season. Since then £1 2s 6d has been handed in by Mr Corkill as donations from those wiio could not be there. The society thanks the donors, wiio, 1 understand, are .going to make theirs a periodic dance donation. The music of Miss Gardiner, of Matapu, gave complete satisfaction. This lady's services have been retained for the season, at both send-offs and .socials, so patrons can be assured of .gGod music. It was appropriate to! have two returned soldiers as M.C.'s— Messrs J. Carlson and A. Rich—who perfomred their onerous duties in a businesslike manner, so that no one was without a partner, and everyone .knew that they were being attended to. The duties of an M.C. are very exacting, as he must be about all the ■i-irsia to look after strangers of both sexes, and must have considerable or-.-•;uiUiung ability as well as a good know, ledge of the intricacies of the dance. JMiiiigatoki has always been fortunate in its choice of M.C. s, but was particularly so on Tuesday night. A number of extras were played by ladies -•su;d gentlemen present, but I shall have to publish their names in subsequent notes, as I have not my memoranda of the dance by me while writing this. A very enjoyable evening was conclude;] by the chairman (Mr Curteis) thanking those present for their attendance, and announcing that monthly o:\nces would be held throughout the winter for the earac object. This an•nmuiecMnont was greeted with applause, lie r;lso stated, on behalf of the ladies' •committee, that the Belgian Sewing Guild would meet every Tuesday, and would net be postponed on any occasion.
