(From Our Own Correspondent.)

MEMORIAL SERVICE

The' Presbyterian Church was Crowded on Sunday when the 11-ev. Si. Gordon Kirgan conducted a memorial service in honor of boys from this district who have made the great sacrifice for their 'King and Empire. The Boy Scouts from Hawera attended in full force, and there were numerous Territorials, Cadets and returned men in the congregation. The preacher praised the example of Normanby boys, and spoke in glowing terms of theicr patriotism. He said t'nat Private Alexander Ewing, an ex-Gordon Highlander, who .enlisted from Normanby, had, in a special degree; exhibited that "spirit for nhich the British Tommy is noted, fo;r hearing of a shortage in the Reinforcements, he signed on on a Thursday morning, passed the .doctor, and left for camp the following day. Private Ewing was killed in action in August, and his mother j who resides in Scotland, will have the sympathy of all who had conic in contact with her son, and also find consolation in knowing that he aied fighting for right and honor. Ta-ooper Harold Lowick Bates, an old Normanby boy who fell in the great advance in France, was the son of Mr and Mrs'J. T. Bates, for many years- resident here, but now of Rawhiiiiroa, Eltham, He went with an early Reinforcement, and had seen considerable service. Mr and Mrs Bates will have the sympathy of their many old friends here. Mention was also made of the following old Normanby boys who had been wounded: G. Stoddart, C. Coles, A., W. and F. Epping (3). ' BOY SCOUTS. The Hawera Boy Scouts were unfprtnuiate in striking bad weather for thgir camp. However, they were .accommodated in the Town Hall, and apparently had a. good time. . They are a fine lot of lads, and are^to be congratulated on their exemp'TTary conduct whilst here; I the township, will always, be proud to ! give them a hearty welcome.
