WOOL

The 1916-a. 7 wool-selling season opens in Christchurch on November 9th, and Wellington follows on November 15th. Already wool is coming into local stores for the first sale in this centre, (says the Wellington Post). Brokers are likeiy to be hampered by lack of clerical and manual labor, due to so many men being ,on active service, hence the need for farmers to send in wool early. Pri r yate buyers who have been'travelling in- the Hawke's Bay district report that growers have fairly high ideas of the values of wool—from 16d to 20d is asked for crosshreds on the station. It is believed that practically all the wool to come into local salerooms this coming season will find its way to England" but otherwise the sales will be free of \i6vernment restrictions of any kind— at least as to its market value. The increased freight on wool, of Id per pound bears also the increased proportion of the primage of 10 per cent., and it is. estimated that it will cost the grower fully lid pe.r pound more this season to sl^ his wool than it did last. Overseas buyers operating at the local sales will, o'-. course, provide for the increased freignts in'their bids. While there is every probability of sufficient freight snace for wool to London up to Januaxy, a shortage is expected afterwards, judged by the present outlook for shipping. ,
