FIRES.

ANOTHER OUTBREAK IN NEW

PLYMOUTH,

A fire occurred inKew Plymouth 61? Saturday afternoon in a block of buildings situated on the western side of Devon street and facing Brougham street, the property of Mr Newton King. The fire burst out in the northeastern top .floor of Mr King's premises—in what was knojVn...;jas rs?the onion room—where men had Seen engaged in 'the morning, but its origin is inexplicable. Immediately after the alarm sounded the brigade was on the scene, and the conflagration was speedily extinguished.

Mr King's offices and mart were extensively damaged by water, a::.d the loss there will probably run into some hundreds of pounds. Upstairs three rooms were practically gutted, and a couple of others were seriously affected. The part oft the building occupied By Mr' R Cock (Piccadilly Dining Rooms) also suffered considerably from smoke and water, and Mr Cock estimates that his insurances, £100 in the National office, will not cover1' his loss. He lo«t all his personal belongings. The shops and o^-ees of other occumnts of the block—Messrs W. T. • Hookham (clothier), Bui-ke (bootmaker), Phoenix Assurance Company, D. Hutchen (lawyer), Alliance Assnrnnce, Taranaki1 Amusements, Ltd., Sanderson and Falconer, and T. Buxtori—were not damaged.

Th^ insurances held by Mr King (all in tne Phoenix Office) are: Stock in mart £500, stationery £200, block of buildings £"2250, a total of £3450.
