(Received Feb. 19, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 18. Official.—The British East African force on the 12th carried out a reconaissance in force at Salaita Hill to ascertain the enemy's strength, and found the .hill strongly held and the main German reserves in the neighborhood. Our casualties were 172, of whom 139 were among the 2nd South African Brigade, who had their first experience of bush fighting. The branch railway is now 2-J- miles from Salaita. The German commandant in the Cameroons, Zimmerman, has escaped into Spanish territory.
