ITALY.

FRONTIER FIGHTING FAVORS ITALIANS.

AUSTRIANS EXPELLED FROM

VARIOUS POSITIONS

ATTACKS ON ITALIAN POSITIONS

REPULSED

ROME, June 17

Official.—There were combats favorable to us along the whole frontier, notably in the Carnic Alps and on the Isonzo. The Alpini at Monte Nero charged and expelled the Austrians from positions northward of the principal summit, and took 315 prisoners, including fourteen officers.

Mr Donohoe (the war correspondent) reports from Rome that the Austrians attacked the Italian positions in the Sesis pass at dawn and advanced in massed formation, but few lived to reach the Italian trenches. The Austrian artillery was unable to co-operate owing to the unfavorable nature of the ground, fearing to decimate their own ranks. Their infantry reserved their fire, trusting to the bayonet, but the Italians' fire swept the open ground and the Austrians fell in heaps. The first and second attacks withered away and the third also failed.
