Mr McVi ly said that McNair was superseded by Jeffreys- on list D3 in •im/ I xCi? SSir was abore Jeffreys and \f«i • irrespective j^^^^ McNair No 8 m graded, Jeffreys No. 44 m grade 6. Since then Jeffreys had been promoted to the oosition of district engineer at Ohakune. McNair was still m grade 6 and Jeffreys ia grade 5. *
James Burnett, chief engineer in charge of the maintenance branch, said m making the appointment at Ohakune he came to the conclusion that Jeffreys was the most suitable officer for the position, and so recommended accordingly. A person who left the Government service for increased remuneration (appellant went from the Public ■TV-orks Department to the Manawatu railway) and drifted back to the Government was not entitled to more consideration or the same consideration as those who .remained in the service of the Government. He did not think the same training: was possible on the Manawatu railway.
F. W. Mac Lean, inspecting engineer, s^>id he had no hesitation in saying ■that Jeffreys was the much more Dualized man of the two in the work of the Department.
Mr McPherson announced that tho evidence of the Public Works officer® was being taken on commission in Wellington, and, this being so, the inquiry was adjourned sine die.
