FIRE ON A SHOWGROUND.

MELBOURNE, Sep. 22. A fire broke out in the main grandstand on the showground, on which there were over a thousand people. They quickly cleaved. Before the fire brigade arrived from a town live miles distant the fire had spread to the Exhibition portion, amidst great excitement in the large crowds. Owing, to the poor water supply, the fire was not suppressed until 18 structures, including the industrial pavilion and great quantities of valuable exhibits, besides the grandstand, costing £7000, had been destroyed.

The total damage i 3 estimated at from ,£15,000 to £17,000.
