BOXING.

The boxing tournament promoted by the Hawera Sports and Pastimes Club to assist- the candidature of Miss Russell (the dub's nominee) was held at Manaia on Saturday evening before a fair attendance of the public. Several of the scheduled bouts had to be re-arranged owing to some of the contestants .not putting in an appearance. A bright and interesting programme was submitted, and several exciting bouts were brought off. Proceedings opened with a lively bout between Turkin«ton (Elthani) and Baylev (Eltham). Bayley was in good form, and used both hands well. Turkington has a very free and attractive style of boxing, but Bayley was the more aggressive, and at 'the end of four 2min. rounds received the verdict. The next bout was between two midgets, Cusaek (Hawera) and Bayley (Eltham). Both boys were about' twelve years of n^e. but fought out three lively rounds. Cusaek had not the physique of his opponent, but used left and right in ouick succession. Cusaek did most of the leading, and was declared the winner. E. Higgs (Hawera) and W. Goombes (Opunake) was the best bout of the evening. Coombes has a very unorthodox style of boxinr. and is a hard man to handle. He has great stamina, and is very nopular with the audience. Higgs boxed brilliantly, using his head well, and had an advantage with his long reach. He used his left well in the second round, and steadied Coombes, who swings rather wildly. The last round was all Higgs', who scored points by the use of a right cross, and. the Verdict, "Higgs the winner," was greeted with applause. Cm-ran (Opunake) and F. Willcox (Manaia) went three rounds, but the latter was palpably out of condition. He had not had a clove on for two years, and was accordingly at a great disadvantage. Curran has improved a lot since Hawera, and is the makings of a £ood welter. He was declared the winner. H. Conestake (Hawera), who came in at the last minute to assist the association, met Bayley (Eltham). Bayley was too fit for'his opponent, and rushed him from the start. The referee intervened and awarded the bout to Bayley. New (Hawera) and Turkington (Eltham) provided a novel turn in the shape of a blindfold bout, and the audience were greatly amused at the movements of both boys trying to feel one another and "mix it.'' Both boxed a very interesting oneround spar at the" conclusion. The Bayley brothers also sparred three very lively rounds, and showed considerable promise as boxers. Mr King (of Wanganui), who was referee, gave an exhibition of shadow enarring, and also of the value of a £ood left as a points scorer. Mr King showed himself a capable referee. Mr Mahoney was M.C.. Messrs H. Rodger and E. Gallagher official seconds, and Mr J. Russell timekeeper.
