TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs W. C. Dudley (chairman), O. A. Muller, W. Todd, C. A. Trotter ,and I). Ross.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as under: From the Prime Minister, in reply to the Board's communication ©f April 8 re the railway, expressing his thanks for the Board's appreciation of the Government's action in denning the route of the Opunake railway, and stating that the ceremony of turning the first sod of the line would be performed by the Minister of Public Works at an early date.

From the Minister of Public Works expressing himself in terms similar to those of the Prime Minister's letter.

The chairman moved that the. Board be a committee to act in conjunction with the County Council in making arrangements for the Ministerial visit, the Board's expenditure not to exceed £10.

. From the Auditor-General, in reply to the Board's enquiries as to what amount the Board has power to spend on outside ordinary expenditure; the Departmental reply was that £15 was the limit. .

From the poundkeeper, asking the Council to allow the foreman to inspect the pound fence as it was in an advanced state of decay. The poundkeeper was prepared to contribute half the cost of the repairs.—As the poundkeeper was charged no rent for the pound on condition that he kept the same in order, the Board decided to take no action. ■

From the Health Department, asking for the roll number of certain sections in the township.—The clerk to reply.

From the Municipal Association, notifying the holding of the annual conference in July. From Mr Moore, applying for payment of trust funds.—Payment to be made when the proper authority is handed in to the Board's office.

The chairman reported on. the result of the public meeting held jn connection with the water and drainage proposals.

It was decided, after a lengthy discussion: "That the clerk go into the matter of procedure necessary for the taking of a poll on the question, and report at next meeting." It was also decided, on the suggestion of the chairman, that Mr Climie be written to asking if there was any reason, against transferring 4-inch mains from Foy street and Gisborne Street to King and Domett stretts; also what hoight of water or volume can be obtained at the farthest point from the I^-inch pipes. The foreman's report on the various works completed during the month, and also several recommendations as to improvements to some of the bystreets, were considered.

It was decided to hold over a request for the lighting of Tennyson street until a. later meeting. Suggested improvements at the rear of the Town Hall were also held over pending a further report. Accounts amounting to £35 0s 3d were passed for payment, and the Board rose.
